Transdisciplinary Theme: Sharing the Planet
"Creating a Better Tomorrow"
At Akal Academy Baru Sahib, Grade fivers began their exhibition journey by unpacking what the PYP Exhibition means. Leaners had a reading session about the requirements of the exhibition and what happens during the exhibition. Students reviewed the approaches to learning, action, concepts and IB learner profile attributes. All the 5th grade class teachers along with specialist teachers and PYPC, set up a timeline which provided the students with lots of opportunities to explore and develop their interests and understanding.
They had the opportunity to have a chat with the 6th Graders who positively shared about their PYP exhibition experience. Through research and interactive sessions grade 5 students developed their understanding of what PYP exhibition is and looks like, they explored opportunities and issues that matter to them and connected to their interests and passions.
After developing a clear understanding of how PYP exhibition works, the 5th Graders decided on what topic they would like to inquire into and also thought of actions that they could take. With the support of their class teacher, mentors and floating mentors they were diligently researching and showing lots of commitment to what they did. Throughout the process, the children demonstrated the attributes of the learner profile and approaches to learning skills.
They shared their actions which took different forms – stalls, books, role play, songs, board game and power point presentations. After a long journey, the 5th graders eventually celebrated their journey as they presented their findings and understanding of their chosen topics virtually. The description of the chosen issues and opportunities are as follows:
Group 1: The Debuggers
Learners did an in-depth inquiry on ‘Excessive use of internet can create physical and mental health issues. This group presented how people are addicted towards using technology such as mobiles and computers and thereafter shared the safety measures. The SDG that connected to their central idea was
SDG 3: Good heath & wellbeing.
Group 2: Sore Hands
This group presented different challenges faced by the children worldwide and shared how to create a safer environment for the children.
The SDG that connected to their central idea was SDG 5: Gender equality
Group 3: No Spoils Left Squad
Learners showcased how quality education can make people rich in their heart and mind. There will be no inequalities or poverty left, because an educated person can get a good job or start his own business.
The SDG that connected to their central idea was SDG 4: Quality education
Group 4: Ninja Bros
This group explored the ill effects of war. Together researched and shared the peaceful resolution to the conflicts and wars that are happening around the world.
The SDG that connected to their central idea was SDG16: Peace, Justice and strong institutions.
Group 5: The Green Angels
The Green Angels explored how human activities are affecting the natural resources and shared how to conserve the natural environment.
The SDG that connected to their central idea was SDG 15: Life on land
Group 6: Pixie-Dixie the Anti-pollution Squad
This group investigated the causes and effects of global warming and inquired the innovative ways to stop the global warming.
The SDG that connected to their central idea was SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities
Group 7: Marine Saviors
This group explored the life under water and the factors affecting it. On the exhibition day this group presented ways to restore marine life.

Group 8: Eco-warriors
Using a range of text and non-text research resources students carried out an extensive inquiry into various animals who have been extinct and the reasons behind their extinction.
The SDG that connected to their central idea was SDG 15: Life on Land
Group 9: Big Green Saviors
This group shared their findings about the extinct and endangered plants around the worlds and listed the reasons for their extinction. Learners talked about the different ways people can adopt to reduce the extinction in the plant kingdom. The SDG that connected to their central idea was SDG 15: Life on Land
Group 10: Climate Crew
Students presented the causes of climate change with the wider community using Info posters and shared the measures one can adopt to stop in the contribution of climate change. The SDG that connected to their central idea was SDG 13: Climate Change
It was a wonderful experience for the entire school community. The entire Grade 5 team would like to thank all our teachers, students, mentors, floating mentors, parents and administrators to make this happen successfully. All were so cooperative and helped immensely to make this event a success.
